THIOPAQ®: The go-to biogas purification system

THIOPAQ® is a cost-effective and sustainable biogas purification system with which you can meet stringent gas quality requirements. The THIOPAQ® was invented and developed by Paques, in cooperation with universities. It has become the go-to technology for biological H2S removal, and is commonly applied in the wastewater treatment, biomethane and oil & gas industries.

What makes THIOPAQ® unique

  • The THIOPAQ® obtains a very high H2S removal efficiency. Treated gas H2S concentrations of less than 25 ppm are routine - whether facing an inlet concentration of 1,000 ppm, or 200,000 ppm! The THIOPAQ® has a wide turn-down and can easily handle large fluctuations in gas flow.

  • The calorific value of the gas is not diluted, as the process adds no air or oxygen into the biogas. Treated gas is thus ready for use in a gas engine or boiler. With negligible methane slip, the technology is a perfect fit for projects upgrading biogas into biomethane or renewable natural gas (RNG).

  • The small effluent bleed stream from the system is safe for discharge. What’s more, the elemental sulfur produced by the THIOPAQ® can be used as a high-quality organic fertilizer.

  • The high efficiency, proven reliability and low total cost of ownership of THIOPAQ® as a biogas upgrading system or gas purification system have been demonstrated at hundreds of sites world-wide. It enables you to maximize the value of your biogas, and boosts your plant’s sustainability by making bio-sulfur recovery possible.

Broad applicability of THIOPAQ®

Almost any gas-containing H2S can be purified by the THIOPAQ® gas purification system, including biogas, syngas, CO2-rich (off)-gasses, vent streams, and geothermal gas. The THIOPAQ® can be combined with any anaerobic wastewater treatment or digestion system. Applications for the biogas upgrading system extend across the pulp & paper, food & beverage, wastewater treatment, landfill, municipal, bioethanol, sludge/solids digestion, and biofuels industries.

Biogas flows vary from 50 Nm3/hour to more than 50,000 Nm3/hour, and daily sulfur loads range from 10 kg/day to 50,000 kg/day. Standardized systems such as this biogas purification system enable short project lead-times, while Paques’ experienced engineering team can tailor the unit to meet your specific needs.

The THIOPAQ® process explained

The THIOPAQ® (bio)gas filtration system combines fast chemical absorption to remove H2S from (bio)gas and a robust biological recovery of sulfur. It consists of an absorber column coupled to a biological reactor and sulfur recovery device.

In the absorber, H2S -containing gas is brought in contact with washing water via countercurrent exchange, where H2S readily dissolves into the slightly alkaline wash water.

In the bioreactor, naturally-occurring bacteria oxidize the sulfide to elemental sulfur particles, simultaneously regenerating the washing solution. This allows the alkaline washing solution to be continuously reused in the absorber column, leading to very low operational costs.

The sulfur produced in the system is separated in a solids separation step, and can be reused as a high-quality, organic fertilizer.
